My Students

Our school lies right in the heart of our urban community. Rich with diversity and culture. About 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch, more than 58% of our students qualify for English language services, and 15.6% of our students qualify for special education services.

When I asked my struggling readers about favorite books, graphic novels were a hit!

The illustrations draw them in while it also supports word decoding and comprehension. The text seems more accessible to them.

My Project

I have the pleasure of working with the third to fifth-grade readers. They enjoy reading but grade-level texts are daunting. The text increases as the illustrations that they depend on for decoding and comprehension decrease. Encountering story after story that is difficult weighs on them. Their self-confidence and enjoyment of reading suffer.

My students need access to books that they can read independently at home.

Our school has a media center. However, due to major construction, budget cuts, and lack of staff, we do not have it open for students to check out books.

These books provide excitement, accessibility, and opportunity to see themselves as the diverse characters in the stories. They also provide a look into diverse cultures and academic content.
