Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first graders are from the most diverse part of the city. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. It is up to us to make sure they get the best public education they deserve. My students are young, ambitious and curious. My students work together as a team. They work together to achieve common goals. They are supportive of their classmates and celebrate the successes of their classmates. They are a hardworking group of students who display excitement and enthusiasm toward learning.
Our philosophy is: We Build Our Future One Step at a Time!
Our school is a Title One/Renaissance School. The majority of our students are from low-income families, which is reflected by our ninety-one percent free or reduced-price lunch status. Although my kids face socioeconomic challenges, they come to school everyday willing to learn. I get the most satisfaction as a teacher when I see their faces light up when they finally "get it" or when I read a book that completely captivates their attention and takes them on a journey. Many times, materials are needed to achieve those goals and thus, I have decided to start this project.
My Project
Our students have had a rocky start to their school year after Hurricane Irma passed right through our city and then Hurricane Maria devastated homes of families in Puerto Rico and thus many were displaced into our community and school. Our team is making it a mission to have this year be a memorable and effective learning experience for all. Our goal for this project is to obtain a camera with video capabilities to capture different family night events. Family nights are a great way to create a sense of community. They help parents get connected to the school and show kids that school can be fun. We want to invite our families that were displaced from Puerto Rico and make them feel welcomed. They have suffered enough and it is time for them to have some fun. With the images we take, we can develop them and display on a bulletin board so parents can relive those fun moments.
When parents are involved, they become active partners, students achieve more, exhibit more positive attitudes and behavior, and feel more comfortable in school settings.
We have in mind many different events to create this sense of community within our school. Some include Giant Game Night, movie night, math, science, literacy, STEAM, etc. We want to make sure we document these events correctly so that parents can relive those moments.
That is the power of a photo. It captures a moment in time that we will never be able to visit again. However, it elicits emotions and memories we hold dear in our heart. In the end, photos printed will be given back to the families so they can look back on the memories they had.
Please help make this dream a reality with your support.
