My students need a digital camera and printer with supplies for printing in order to document their research as they explore science and technology through collaboration.
A life-long love of Science begins with exploration in Early Childhood classrooms! That's just what my students gain while completing STEM group projects in our 1st grade class!
I teach an active group of 23 first graders.
Three students are diagnosed with special needs, and two receive ELL instruction. We are a Title 1 school with approximately 560 students in an urban area. My students are inquisitive and eager to learn and share as they explore everything the world has to offer.
My Project
This year I have implemented a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) center in my classroom to help the students gain valuable 21st Century skills, such as: collaboration, engineering, physical science concepts, and mathematical relationships. Imagine students gaining all these skills while they also work on reading, writing, and oral literacy too! We will use the digital camera to document our learning in a way that words can't possibly encompass, by creating documentation boards and other displays. This way the learning can be shared with everyone!
My first grade students already love to create and are naturally curious.
By having access to a digital camera, their projects will come alive to others, and the first graders will become even more excited to write and record as they make captions for photos, and write about their research process! My hope is that by sharing the results with others, my students will not only develop a love of Science, but also realize that they can share other topics they are interested in through writing!
