Jen and Alison are both high achieving students in my intro to digital photography class. They have come up with the idea of getting a DSLR camera for the class that students will be able to use to complete current and new projects.
Currently our students primarily use their phones to take the photos required for projects. They suggested that if we had a DSLR students will be able to up their photo skills while being able to give back to the school. They have identified three classes that could immediately take advantage of the new camera, Intro to Digital Photography, Digital Photography, and Video Productions.
Their idea to bring a DSLR camera to our school goes beyond the classroom. They want to give students that opportunity to go to various school events and photograph the action whether it is a sporting event, musical, or special fieldtrip. This is where they believe it reaches beyond the individual class by showing students participating in different activities.
When I discussed the possibility of using a high quality DSLR camera for projects students were very excited. This camera would allow students to explore still and video photography outside of the current method of using their phones.
Students going to school for art or film will learn the basics of the equipment used prior to attending their school of choice. Students will also have the opportunity to learn how to use high quality images for other uses including creating various print and video media that is used in different career fields. Students will be able to sign out the camera to take to school events. These photos can be used in numerous places included the school newspaper and website. Students love to see photos of sports, band concerts, plays, speeches, and other events. Being able to promote and show off the variety of activities students are in promotes a positive atmosphere at our school.
In Their Own Words
We are looking to purchase a DSLR camera for the purpose of taking pictures and videos of school sponsored events, as well as for use in the digital photography classes offered at school. We feel that this would give our peers an outlet for expression of the high school experience through their eyes, which will help to create a greater sense of camaraderie at Millbury High School.
By having this resource available to sign out on a regular basis, school clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities, along with individuals who are looking to enrich school climate and culture can capture the spirit of Millbury High School. A camera that is available based on this type of a system will make the student’s perspective available to a wider percent of the school and surrounding community. In leading this project, we feel that we exhibit leadership qualities in the sense that we are promoting student voice at MHS.
With our project being funded, we would be able to open up the camera to all students so that everyone would have a chance to explore photography. Acquiring a new camera would also allow classes, such as Digital Photography, to complete more sophisticated projects and further develop skills in capturing and editing photos. If this project is funded it would help increase creativity in students in a variety of classes and activities inside and outside of school.
