My students need basic personal care items that we take for granted (lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes). During the winter months, they especially need socks, hats, and gloves.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our population of students are Hispanic and African-American. They are limited in resources with over 90% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch so resources are limited.
We try our best to create an environment that is safe and open.
Many of our students are also teen parents or dealing with identity issues. Due to those factors and lack of resources, many of them are on their own with the responsibility to find shelter and food. Our students find ways to get creative with limited supplies. They are thankful for new things and look forward when we are able to expose them to new things. Our students come to school for stability and the chance to forget about their circumstances while working to provide a better life for themselves.
So, this project will provide those supplies. Thank you in advance for thinking of us!
My Project
Many of our students are homeless, living in shelters, or going from house to house because they lack a stable place to live. Those challenges come with them to school in the form of hygiene issues, limited clothing, and constantly seeking out snacks due to hunger.
My project is filled with items that our struggling students desperately need in order to focus more on school and less on finding a way to cover their basic needs.
Socks, lotion, deodorant, and mouthwash will make our students feel better about themselves, come to school more, and have a more positive outlook on life.
For the girls, the sanitary pads/tampons and deodorant are critical for feeling good about yourself. The personal care items will be allow our students to feel clean and take care of their overall physical health. They will be able to use their limited funds in other areas.
With some basic care needs covered, our students can come to school and focus on getting the work done for graduation. In addition, our student parents can now how resources to help support their families.
