Can you imagine hovering around the book center and not being able to find one book that you can read? I need easy readers for my students who are emergent readers.
My class is made up of self-contained deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
My students range from third to fifth grade, but some have reading levels that are several years below their actual grade. They love to read and listen to reading, but do not get enough experience with text that fits their reading ability, but still has a level of text complexity that will engage them and challenge them to comprehend at higher reading levels. We are a public school in a suburban area of Florida.
My Project
I am requesting a classroom library of kindergarten and first grade fiction and nonfiction story books. I need these books to increase my classroom library to give my students who are reading below level more choices on what they read.
According to Pathways to the Common Core (Calkins, Ehrenworth, & Lehman, 2012), there are a few challenges facing teachers as we begin to implement the Common Core standards, especially for Informational Text. These challenges include:
1. Students not reading enough nonfiction text. Common Core advocates that 45% of students' academic reading be composed of informational text.
2. Students aren't reading "just-right" informational text. The text must be able to be read with at least 96% accuracy to obtain comprehension.
3. Students are not engaging with informational texts in the appropriate way.
4. Students have no choice in what to read.
My goal for this project is to get more high-interest Common Core exemplary books on my students' reading levels into their hands by giving them more choices in what they read!
I want them to look at my book center and easily find a book that is a "perfect fit!"
