Help me give my students hands-on learning experience about money with books about finance, money equivalency puzzles, self-inking coin stamps and time and money activity mats!
I teach first grade on a Native American Indian Reservation. 100% of the student population receives free or reduced fee lunch. I can identify with my students, in that I grew up in an area where oftentimes people mistakenly believed that we couldn't achieve our dreams. I 100% believe my students can be as successful as they want to be, in whatever way that looks to them. I love to give my students experiences and exposure to ideas that they may have not have experienced yet.
I reject the student deficit model and instead embrace that they are already wonderful learning beings and I would like to ignite even more passion and curiosity into their already bright minds.
The thing I noticed about my students at Christmas time, was that they didn't focus on what new toy they were going to get from Santa, they talked about the fun experiences they were having with their families. I know my students would genuinely appreciate new learning opportunities within the classroom.
My Project
I can see the joy on my students' faces as they sit down for morning meeting and I put giant money on the board for them to take turns counting. I can also see their excitement as they go to their math centers and have a new math game to play or enjoy reading a money book.
My students will love playing student store, writing and reading store signs, and then learning to count out change.
When students are playing, they are not only learning how the world works but also social skills. Having these new math tools will help create not only new math learning, but also special childhood memories.
