A Peaceful Place: Tools to Support Students Who Have Experienced Trauma
My students need tools to help to them to regulate and calm themselves. A library of books to help with mindfulness, fidget tools, yoga mats and a peace place will all support our students.
My students are from many different walks of life. There are 22 languages spoken. Students from Djibouti, Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and many other countries walk through our doors every day ready to learn and grow. 90% of students meet the federal guidelines for free and reduced lunch. We are located in a rapidly changing neighborhood with housing growth and development exacerbating already existing financial concerns and challenges for our families.
Because many of our students have experienced traumatic events, they need a place to learn strategies to deescalate and become regulated ready to learn.
My Project
I am requesting a library of books to help with mindfulness, fidget tools, yoga mats and a peace place will all support our students. Our school is a unique community that services students from all over the world. Many of our students come to us having experienced trauma and need tools to support their social emotional learning. Students need to feel safe, regulated and secure in order to learn.
A peaceful place where students can go to calm down, learn mindfulness techniques, and take a moment to breathe so they can be ready to learn will benefit not only our students who have experienced trauma but all students.
Establishing a peaceful place gives students a way to manage their feelings. It helps them learn to recognize their feelings and empowers them to come up with strategies to help themselves and others be the best they can be.
