A Passport to Egypt: The Red Pyramid

My students need 60 copies of the Rick Riordan book, The Red Pyramid, and one audio version of the book as a supplemental novel for our Ancient Egyptian Unit.

My Students

I teach Language Arts and Social Studies at a diverse public city school where readers range drastically in Lexile scores, income level, ethnicity, and values. My 6th grade class is always full of vibrant young learners waiting to be engaged and taken to new worlds. Rarely do students have the chance to take books home. I intend for each of my students to be able to have access to their class book in school but to also take a book home every evening and devour this novel. They will participate weekly in Socratic circles and readers theatre based on their assigned readings.

Teaching 6th graders about Egyptian history is always an adventure.

I infuse hands-on activities with historical texts to liven their inquiry, such as papyrus making (pictured in profile) and making their own plaster cartouche. This year I plan to take things one step further with a high interest novel, The Red Pyramid. While we read we will be investigating the political, religious, and cultural aspects of ancient Egypt, as we trying to make modern connections to our own Capitol. The Red Pyramid is a whirlwind hero adventure story told in the multiple perspectives of two estranged bi-racial siblings. The book references and enlightens students on the little known gods and goddesses of Egypt, ancient rituals, political intrigue, and geography. Reading skills such as making predictions, visualizing, making connections, comparing and contrasting all come naturally as the story is told from a middle school student’s perspective. The theme of being different and fitting in because of race

My Project

The first novel choice of the year really sets the tone for learning with students throughout the year. I’ve scoured libraries searching for the perfect high interest novel, which gives connections between our modern world and ancient Egypt. This is the one! Exciting students about Egypt is less difficult than exciting them to actively read daily. This book will draw students into the world of historical fiction and will inspire them for years to come.

I can't wait for students to make real world connections between the characters and conflict in this book and the history of our world.

Imagine on your next family trip to a museum you encounter a middle school student spouting out their knowledge of the Pyramid of Khufu and its king. That will be my student! Students will be so amazed to see that the world of Egypt is visually available in their own backyard.
