Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades get very excited when they know it is 'printing time'. They have participated in some form of printing since they were in kindergarten. Due to budget restraints, purchasing the specialized paper and materials needed to do these projects isn't always an option.
My amazing students are from a middle class working neighborhood.
Although my school is not in a lower income area, usually both parents work in these families. Even though they have many outside activities, most are not exposed to the Fine Arts on a regular basis, if at all. The grade levels that this project is targeting are third, fourth, and fifth.
My Project
Whether it is water-based markers used on styrofoam plates or gluing layers of paper together to create a complicated collograph; there is something magical about 'pulling' your first print. And students love it!! There are so many printing possibilities that they can learn about! This project will provide an enhancement of skills, increase in knowledge and a boost in each student's confidence. No matter the skill level of the student, printing projects are always successful.
My students need more than the basic supplies to be exposed to different types of printing in the upper elementary grades that we otherwise might not be able to attempt. They need printing plates, ink, metallic paper, line cutter, and linoleum.
These three grade levels will be able to go beyond the basic printing lesson and stretch their imaginations and skills remarkably.
They will be exposed to many more artists and techniques that they normally would not be made aware of in the regular art curriculum. These materials are easily adaptable and successful with each student's ability and style of learning.
