I teach in a school of choice. In my school district, we have two junior/senior high school where students can apply to attend. All courses are taught at the honors/AP level. All the teachers are highly motivated and are constantly pushing the students to their potential or beyond. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to work in this school with these students.
As a science teacher, there are two things that I work hard on in my classroom, the first is to expose my students to new and exciting technology and the second is to give them as many hands on opportunities as possible.
These two strategies help them bridge the gap between learning, understanding, and mastery. It is amazing to watch a classroom of students as they progress from the introduction of a new topic, to the "ah ha" moment when it all comes together. This is not always an easy task to do, but keeping them motivated and excited about science is half the battle.
To do what I do, I am always looking for help and resources from the local community as well beyond.
My Project
I feel so fortunate to be able to teach a subject that I am so passionate about. As a marine science teacher I have an opportunity to open students minds to the wonders of the ocean. Living along the east coast of Florida, sea turtles are a common sight especially during nesting season.
There are five species of sea turtles that nest along our coast, understanding what makes each species different is a challenge for many students.
With a set of replica sea turtle skulls, students will be able to touch and handle the skulls to help understand what makes these marine reptiles so amazing.
