Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
By the end of the year I would like all of my students to be able to open up a browser, research a topic, log into their Google account, type up a doc and print.
My students come from the heart of East Oakland.
Our school is a neighborhood charter school. Most students live within walking distance. Unfortunately, it is also located in one of the the roughest parts of Oakland. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many have access to phone and tablet technology but most do not have a home laptop or computer, essential for basic typing and Internet search skills.
My Project
My students currently have access to some class Chromebooks thanks to generous donations. I split the class into small groups and some use educational leveled reading and math programs called iReady or ST Math while others do independent work or meet with me.
Having a class set of Chromebooks is important to me because I would like to be able to each student how to use the internet to do research and then type up a document and print. If I am showing the class how to click though a procedure, it would be great if they could all be on their own computer following step by step. Learning by doing is so much more powerful than learning by just watching. During writing, all students could be on computers typing up their paragraphs or researching on the internet. These technological skills are crucial for students today.
Think about how often you use the computer to research a topic or write up a letter or email.
Giving all of my students complete access to computers will allow them to learn and practice these important life skills.
