A "Once in a lifetime experience" for my students, and an "opportunity to make a difference for underprivileged Special Ed. students" for you..........
Seeing live theater in New York City is something that so many of us take for granted...my students at P.S. 142 who live on the lower east side in Manhattan can only imagine what Broadway looks like. I want to give them a chance to experience "The Lion King" in all its glory!
New York (past and present) is the 4th grade social study curriculum. My students are emotionally disabled and we currently study art therapy and musical therapy as coping techniques. They really enjoy both; I have brought them to all of the museums and could only imagine how much they would appreciate Broadway. My student body as a whole is underprivileged so we funded these trips through bakes sales and a calendar sale. The students created and sold the calendars. While these efforts have helped to boost self-esteem and allow these cultural field trips, we could not subsidize a trip to a Broadway musical.
This is why I am requesting that these deserving students be considered for a donation that would allow this trip. I believe that Broadway is one of greatest attributes of New York City. My students would benefit from a trip such as this on many levels; not the least of which would be the unique experience and magic of such an adventure. This is an opportunity for these particular students that will not come along often.
MY personal goal for the year was to familiarize my students with the surroundings of New York City. I wanted to foster an appreciation for this amazing city and illustrate what else it has to offer. I made this goal when I realized how seldom these children left their little community that they live in. I have taken them to Museums, bi-weekly trips to the public library, old age home, parks, Battery Park (where they were taught how to fish). We have also been on trips to learn about the NY waterways and what lies beyond them and the bridges. There is no doubt in my mind that to see "The Lion King" would be the trip that would bring the most to these children. This is why I am hoping that you can find it in you to help me make it happen. I thank you for your time and consideration.
We would appreciate any donation you are able to give and of course we would send you our class-designed calendar.
