Hello, I am a fourth grade teacher at Nicholson School in Chicago, IL. There are three fourth grade classes with a total of 60 students who receive free or reduced lunch. All the teachers' work together corroboratively with our lesson plans as well as switch classes to teach students. We are in the middle of the school year in which the majority of the students identified need to have exposure to Social Science to raise their test scores. The students face daily challenges as a result of their environment. Therefore, students don't have the financial resources to participate in field trips that will help their intellectual growth and development. As dedicated teachers we are trying to improve our students test scores by providing a trip to the Alder Planetarium so the students can see the Discover Our Universe Exhibit that would give them a better outlook on geography. This will help the students better understand the Illinois State Goal 17, which deals with Social Science. This goal is important for the students to understand the world geography and the effects of geography on society, with an emphasis on the world. It will give the students an opportunity to identify the components of the earth's physical systems. More importantly, it will help the students relate more to the ecosystems once they have the chance to see it for themselves. By going to the Alder Planetarium it will give the students the basic recognition of Social Science. I think it is very clear how important a field trip to the Alder Planetarium would be to the students. They would greatly benefit from this field trip in providing an understanding of the world's physical features and how they affect economies, politics and human interaction. Please give our students the opportunity to experience this field trip. The students would be ecstatic to find out they will have an opportunity to go to the Alder Planetarium. It will give them the inspiration that they need to know that people really care about their education.
