A NYC School With No Gym Needs Phys. Ed. Equipment!
My students need these weights because our school does not have a gymnasium. Our students deserve physical education opportunities,and these weights will make that happen.
Imagine being a high school age student who spends all day in classes and has little to no physical activity in your life. Unfortunately, this is how many of the students that attend my high school live. Also, unfortunately, our school does not have a gymnasium, so phys. ed. opportunities are limited.
Our school is an alternative public high school that hosts a population of students ages 16-21.
Many of our students come from impoverished areas of New York City and have chosen to leave their other high schools for reasons such as drugs, gang violence, and intolerance. We have a large LGBT population who often see our school as a safe-haven and a place where they can openly be themselves without judgment. Our students feel safe, accepted, respected and nurtured at City-As-School because we provide the environment that makes it so. We accept all students from all backgrounds and we have successfully built a community where students are celebrated for who they are.
My Project
I am requesting these sets of weights because our school building does not have a gymnasium, which makes providing physical education opportunities difficult for our school. These weights are the equipment that we need in order to provide age-appropriate and life-changing physical education opportunities for our students. Our students will be able to see how easy it is to incorporate physical activity in their daily lives throughout high school and beyond! These weights will help show our students that they do not need an entire gym or an expensive gym membership to stay healthy and motivated. These weights will help our students learn basic, fun, and challenging exercise moves that they can not only use themselves, but that they can teach others and pass on the gift of health and well-being.
This project is so important because too many teenagers today, especially in New York City, lack the self-confidence and health benefits that physical education can provide.
