My Students

My students are ready for history to come alive. Our class needs books that will teach our students what it was like to be a child during the Colonial Time Period. Teaching reading with historical fiction helps to integrate our curriculum and enrich our social studies lessons!

I teach in a suburban school that is a part of a large corporation.

We cater to many different housing additions, apartment complexes, and government subsidized housing. There are 26 students in my room with a wide range of ability levels. They are active ten, eleven, and twelve year old kids that work hard and are eager to learn.

My Project

By using the novel, The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare, it will integrate social studies and reading. Students will understand the trials of what it was like to be a colonist and a Native American child during the 1700's. History will be brought alive through these characters while students improve their own reading comprehension.

This project will put actual novels into the hands of each student.

This project will also introduce the historical fiction genre to these students. The novels will help to improve students' reading confidence and their understanding of a specific historical time period.
