A Novel Reading Experience

My Students

My students are all 8th graders and the class is English Language Arts. The students live in a small city and the suburban and rural areas around it. They come from a diverse mix of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds but they all have one thing in common, they want to feel capable and valuable. When students do not have the needed supplies to even start their work, they often feel powerless and confused. They hear the words that they are valuable but not the actions that back the words up when they don’t have the basics to get their work done. My students are smart, hardworking, willing, respectful 8th graders that want to show the world what they know, want to learn, want to work, and want to read books that interest them.

My Project

My students have worked hard all year. All of our units of study have been leading up to the end of the year unit in which we read “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton. We have 30 copies and we usually read it together in class so that is enough. This year, because schools are closed, my students will have to read at home. This means I need 60 more books so all of my students have a copy and we can work together(electronically) to finish out the year strong with a unit that they have been looking forward to.
