Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Like sixth graders all over the country, my students love to learn and explore. By receiving funds for this project, I will be able to help engage my students in the world of learning and will allow them to grow in their knowledge.
I teach 6th grade in a rural, Title I middle school.
Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. The school is the center of the community. With limited funding, less money is spent on each student in our county than in most other counties in NC. Donations from Donors Choose help to provide opportunities and materials that we may not otherwise be able to offer to our students.
My Project
Many students in today's world need exposure to real-world social issues. The novel Refugee by Alan Grant draws students into what many of their contemporaries experience. Students will engage in a historical text about three young people from different counties, time periods, and different cultures that become refugees to understand how these issues affect people.
It can be difficult for students to imagine themselves in other kids’ shoes—especially when they’ve lived such different experiences from our own.
This novel tackles very serious subjects - like war, tragedy, and of course, refugee crises with high-speed action, perspective shifts, and connections across timelines keep his students on the edge of their seats.
This novel will be used not only to teach ELA curriculum but geography, history, and social responsibility. This novel is engaging and brings to life a relevant circumstance and social concern. Students need exposure even though Alan Gratz’s novel tackles very serious subjects—like war, tragedy, and of course, refugee crises—the book’s high-speed action, perspective shifts, and connections across timelines keep his students on the edge of their seat. Watch his review to see if it’s right for your classroom! Rich, impactful literature that helps them understand the world around them. Students will do in-depth character studies, and research projects that will incorporate geography, culture and critical thinking to come up with possible solutions to help the refugee crisis. The Teacher Pay Teacher gift card will be used to purchase materials for instruction and projects.
