My students are a diverse group with various reading abilities and interests. They are fun, inquisitive, and up for any challenge I give them!
I want to give them any advantage I can and prepare them for the rest of high school.
Many of them are reluctant readers, but I hope to help change that this year! My students need reading materials that they can relate to and be inspired by. I want to challenge them with high-interest, contemporary novels.
Research shows that many high school students do not read for classroom assignments or for pleasure. Research also shows us that reading increases vocabulary, standardized test scores, and overall academic performance.
Students often say that typical reading assignments in English classes are outdated, boring, and irrelevant to their lives.
I want my students to realize that there is so much more to reading than the typical canon of literature. The titles I have chosen are diverse, high-interest, and will appeal to students of various reading levels. They are also reflective of my students, which will encourage and inspire them in their reading journeys.
