A novel in every desk is something I would like my students to experience! Our Title I school has random multiple copies of novels purchased by teachers at used book stores and garage sales etc., or discarded from other schools. Sharing is great, but sometimes having your "own" book is exciting.
Our students opt to attend our rural charter school because our classes are smaller than the public schools.
Most read below grade-level. They are full of potential and curiosity, but many have limited financial resources and do not come from homes that stress education. It saddens me to see that they own more digital games and gadgets than books. My goal is to tap into their imaginations and improve their opportunities for future success in society by getting them hooked on books. They actually get very excited about something as basic as having their own book to read with the class, and refer to at their leisure.
My Project
If a child learns to love books, he will always have a friend, a skill, and a healthy way to "escape" from the pressures of a hectic modern world. My goal, simply, is to instill in my students a passion for reading. If I can accomplish this they will be more successful in every aspect of their education. My classroom reading will be better for my students if they each have their "own" copies. I want them to have this basic experience.
My goal is rather simple, but the impact on the educational experience for my students is enormous.
Franklin Roosevelt's goal for the United States in the 1930's was "a chicken in every pot." I am going back to basics with a novel in every desk!
