A Novel Idea

My students need novels to enhance their critical thinking and reading comprehension skills. Due to their giftedness, these 3rd graders are not able to use the traditional reading series. They need richer, more complex text.

My Students

I teach a 3rd grade gifted classroom with students who have varying talents and interests. Due to their above level reading comprehension I am not able to use grade level materials on a day to day basis. We enhance our reading comprehension and critical thinking through novel studies and activities that promote problem solving while allowing creativity to be expressed. They need a variety of resources and opportunities to continue to increase their understanding of complex text and grow as young learners.

My Project

The novels will help my students due to their giftedness and lack of reading materials, because of their advanced reading levels, they are not able to use on grade level materials to continue to promote literacy, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. These novels will be used daily to discuss text, have Socratic discussion, and promote oral language too.

These novels will allow my students to engage in complex text to promote life skills, problem solving, and a love of reading.

My students will benefit from the novels through exposer to enriching vocabulary, complex plot development, and through the exposure to a variety of genres of literature.
