The first thing that comes to mind when I think of my students is DIVERSE. We have so many students from different cultural backgrounds at my school. In addition to that, 80% of our students are considered low, socio-economic status. Our school also has a very high number of students with special needs. My students also have very diverse learning styles. I have the awesome job of teaching all of them Spanish.
I have found and research backs up the fact that having a Free Voluntary Reading program is the best way to differentiate for all learners, regardless of their background.
My Project
Research proves that comprehensible input is the best way to acquire a language. Students can receive input in two ways: listening and reading. The key, however, is that the messages that they hear and read must be comprehensible and interesting. I do my best to provide students with spoken messages in Spanish in a comprehensible and personalized way. We also spend a lot of time reading. Over the past few years, my students have devoured the Spanish books in my collection. Lately, more and more amazing titles of TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) novels have become available. I am requesting an array of eighteen different titles and two multiple title sets of Spanish written novels. I am eager to add to my class library, so that my students have more options of fun, compelling, and most of all COMPREHENSIBLE novels to read.
