I teach in a title one school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I work with English Language learners. My first grade class is comprised of 19 children who are all learning English as a second language. Some have been born in the United States, while others have come from around the globe. The levels of English in our room varies tremendously. Some children sound native-like, while others talk in short, quiet, one and two-word answers. Since the children have such a span in what they can do and where their strengths lie, much of our work is done individually and in small groups. For this reason, it is very important that everyone have their own space to save work. In writing, some children are drafting a piece, while others are illustrating a cover just minutes away from publishing. Materials have to be organized so that every student has access to the materials they need, to support the place they are as a writer. I would like to bring in a large tray portfolio unit from Childcraft. This shelf is designed to give young writers access to the many tools a writers needs, as well as individual cubby holes to house work in progress. Despite abilities and language proficiencies, we are all writers with unique goals. This unit provides a nook for every writer, and a chance to write and succeed at one's own pace.
