Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I school in the Bronx. My bilingual class consists of 25 students from very low-income families. My students are special because they have such a desire to learn. When tested in October 18 out of 25 students were reading a level Pre-A. Now in December, I am proud to see so much growth with 15 students moving up to a level C in just 2 months. We have been working hard to help these students be great readers, writers and mathematicians! Every day I motivate my class and our motto is “Try your best and don’t give up”. We have used this to inspire and motivate each other in the classroom and reach our goals. We currently are seeking donations to acquire more technology to give our students more resources to practice phonics on tablets and computers. As a Title I school, we have limited resources and families also, do not have the funding to help provide the necessary supplies that will help our students reach the stars! Most students do not have computers or tablets at home and rely on the schools to ask programs like I-ready and my on. We are true scholars!
My Project
Non-fiction books are an important part of a child's education. In first grade, students have two non-fiction units. This library will be used for my students to choose their leveled books to read during independent reading and borrow to take home and practice reading. The non-fiction library will help my 1st graders develop background knowledge and content that will help them become better readers and writers. My class will use the facts they learned from the books to share and discuss with their classmates during turn and talks. My students will use these non-fiction books as a model to create their own books. This library will help my students thrive!
