Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have a Life Skills Special Needs class that consists of Autistic students and students with Cognitive disabilities. Most of the students have a dual diagnosis including ADD, ADHD, Vision Impairments and Speech Impairments.

The students are in my classroom all day with the exception of going to PE and Art.

They get all of their core academics with me and the classroom aide. They eat breakfast and lunch in the classroom, as the cafeteria is too overwhelming for them. Some even choose to stay inside at recess due to sensory overload outside with their peers. Our classroom is really their second home.

My Project

The table and chairs will allow my students and myself to sit together in an area of the classroom to work on specific skills such as handwriting, motor skills, vocational skills, community awareness, and safety skills. And, since I have a variety of disabilities in my classroom, it is important that each child have a chair that helps them learn at their ability. Some students can't sit in a hard chair for several hours. Some students need to bounce while learning. Each child is different. If my students get to pick their seat, I think we will see the success skyrocket!
