This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the teacher of a self-contained autism classroom for students in grades 6-8 in South Philadelphia. Almost 100% of the students in my school are economically disadvantaged and it is often difficult to obtain the materials needed to help them succeed.
In my classroom, I have 8 students.
Each one of them has their own unique personality and passion. Some of the students in my classroom have faced hardships or have dealt with tragedy, so it is my job to make my classroom a happy and safe place for them.
My Project
Our classroom is in need of a new table for our small group work and activities. Our old table was broken by the end of the last school year. We currently have one table in our classroom (which was kindly donated last year), but we could really use a second one so that my classroom assistant and I can both work comfortably with small groups of students simultaneously. My classroom is a self-contained autistic support classroom with 8 students. The design of this table will help my assistant and I to work in close proximity of the students and be able to help each individual student we are working with without needing to move around the room. Having a teacher sitting at the same table as them will also help my students to focus more on their work.
