Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students involved in this project are an enthusiastic group of young people who have chosen to play a musical instrument. The students start at the very beginning of the year without being able to hold their instruments, and end up playing multiple instruments alone and in groups.
We have kids at a variety of different levels with a variety of different interests. Some are interested in playing in a marching band, others want to play in a jazz band, and others yet want to play in a traditional concert setting.
The students in the band program are some of the best and brightest kids the school has to offer. As they play more advanced music, they need to have different tools available for use. This year we will have several different pieces that require a mute. The students need to learn how to play with each other and sound as a single unit.
In Their Own Words
The music we're playing this year is awesome. Some of it needs different kinds of mutes for different kinds of sounds. We play together every day in band. The music is hard, but we always seem to be able to get it by the time of the concert. We have learned so much about music and ourselves, and we want to keep playing for a long time.
The younger band students look up to the older band students in the concert band and the jazz band. The more we have a chance to play for them, the more they will be interested in doing music. We remember the first time we saw the band play, and we want to do that for the next group of kids.
Music means a lot to us. We play at school and all over the Yuma area. Everytime we make it out, the people seem to like what we play and have smiles on their faces. The music we're doing this year is tough, but I know we can do it if we have the right equipment.
