Do you remember your favorite teachers reading to you at story time when you where little? I remember wanting them to read my favorite stories over and over again and me wanting to be able to read the stories the same way my teacher did. This is why we are asking for a new listening center.
I have an awesome class of 24 amazing 1st graders.
They live in a very high poverty area where most of their families struggle to put food on the table. Our classroom is a refuge for them and we try very hard to make it the best place we can for them. When starting in 1st grade many of my students were still struggling with knowing their letters. They have come a LONG way and are now truly enjoying reading books. It is an awesome feeling when one of them comes to school in the morning and say "Hey Mrs. S., listen to me read this story!"
My Project
The listening center that we are asking for is a Hamilton Media Boombox that comes with 6 headphones and the jack to plug them all in. The player will play MP3 files on CD or USB memory, audio CDs, cassette tapes and the radio (I could go to the library to get books with cds for my students all the time!). The earphones are padded and will not hurt my little ones' ears and can be stored in the storage case when not in use (knowing them that would only happen during breaks!). With this new listening center the students will be able to use this as a center during our reading block and could lead to more writing about the stories they are reading along with.
Please support our classroom.
My students have worked so hard this year and something like this would be amazing for them! Reading is a skill that you must have to succeed in life. Being read to as a young child is a major influence in your reading abilities. Even though it isn't a live person reading to them the students will still be read to and I know that they will grow from that!
