Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

My Students
I teach ELLs (English Language Learners) students in an urban community where they have so much joy in learning and constantly experiencing life as they know it. ELLs must overcome many challenges, including limited schooling, trauma, and poverty. Some ELLs come from countries where education is not mandated.
My students come from many different countries with different levels of education.
I service high school students that are learning English and some are in special education. There are ELLs who travel and are constantly moving from one school to another. There are also ELLs who may attend school in their native country, but the quality of education is less than in the United States. I am also a middle school cheerleading coach.
My Project
Can you imagine a high school without a library? Our school is small but mighty. We need a new classroom library, with hopes of having it completely ready for September 2020.
I am requesting grade-level, appropriate texts that will enhance my students' ability to read more complex texts while engaging them through various topics and genres.
These books provide students with mirrors of their own lives as well as windows into unfamiliar worlds and cultures. These novels, biographies, histories and picture books allow our diverse students the chance to see themselves and their peers in the books they read. The amazing books in this project represent an important step in the process of building a more diverse collection. I have included a Kindle e-reader, which can hold MANY books (my personal Kindle reader has over 110 books on it). This is a great way to save a bit of shelf space and provide technology in the classroom. I've also included a bar code scanner, so that we can actively keep up with student check-outs of the books.
