Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My school is truly unique as we are a small rural school only a few miles from the Mexican border. Our district is comprised of 99% Latino and mostly English Language Learners (ELLs) with some Newcomers. In order to serve our diverse student population, my school strives to give the best we can to our students. My school has recently opened a STEM/STEAM Center in order to give our 5th through 8th grade kids a space to create, learn, and explore their interest. Their interest include; esports, gaming design, engineering, art, and mathematics. Along with supporting academic areas; I hope to provide a caring space for students to be themselves. I want my students to know that their voice matters, that they have a story to tell and I want to empower them to tell it!

This project aims to provide students with a GoPro camera and accessories to document their school experiences and express their ideas through digital storytelling.

I would love to have student gamers, athletes, and artists use the GoPro to share their perspective when they gaming, are out on the field, or creating their works of art. Telling their story would lead to more students joining these sports/clubs and build a caring and more united community for our students. The portable Bluetooth speaker will allow students to play music in the background of their videos, or have music in the STEM Center as they edit and work. It has been my experience that students have so much to say if we give them the opportunity to shine. I aspire to create a caring and secure environment where every student feels free to express themselves. Thank you for helping me give my students this opportunity!
