Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students attend an urban public school with over 500 children. 92% receive free or reduced price lunch. About half of our students are English language learners. Some students have speech and communication needs as well as autism. They come from diverse backgrounds, but have many things in common.
Students at our school love to learn, and they especially enjoy.
They enjoy learning about plants and animals and collaborating with students at different grade levels, with parents and members of our school community. Finally, they love teaching others what they have learned.
My Project
The Kindergarten students at my school and students of all grade levels and our after school programs enjoy learning about animals and their babies, life cycles and habitats with our school chicken project. Students and community members visit the chickens in our coops and chicken run every day for different purposes. The project keeps growing and the coops we have are in need of repairs and will need to be replaced soon.
Getting another coop will ensure that our project can keep going forward and that students still have a chance to learn about all the things that come with having a chicken habitat at our school.
This includes how to care for and respect animals. It also means learning about nutrition, healthy foods and sustainability. This is because the chickens love to eat our leftover fruits and veggies and help enrich the soil in our school gardens. Also, our students and visiting mentors have a place to visit that helps them enjoy the peace and calmness of the animals. They often comment how relaxing it is just to visit the coop and how the chickens brighten up their day.
