Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the opportunity to teach a diverse group of learners at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Los Angeles, California. I teach my 5th graders Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Health.
My school is located in South Central Los Angeles just a few blocks away from the University of Southern California. The neighborhood provides various obstacles to success that my students must overcome in order to succeed. The environment and
family situations contribute to a difficulty that I have continuously encountered with my students. I find that inspiring my students to appreciate reading is a constant struggle. Although we spend time at various times throughout the school day reading, I find that this does not always transfer to reading at home. When reading my student's reading surveys which measure their attitude towards reading I find that they often see it as a burden or responsibility they are forced to complete because of school. Many see reading as a tedious task forced upon them by adults. Through book clubs which reward students for their independent reading and book talks that advertise some of my favorite literature I have tried to reshape student's attitudes towards reading. Although these efforts have been somewhat successful in the last two years, I feel as though core literature novels are a missing element to instilling a passion for reading in all of my students.
I have a clear vision and plan to implement the use of the class set of the Westing Game. My unit that corresponds to this chapter book includes activities that cover the California Standards for reading, writing, and math. All of these activities will relate back to the book that we will read aloud together as a class. However, this will be very different from our short stories we read in our Open Court basal reading. This book will be an experience, not just a book to be read. Students will take on the role of detectives as they search for clues and debate who will get the million dollar prize at the end of the book. This book will expose my students to a reading genre (mystery) that is missing in our basal reader.
There are few things more satisfying to a teacher than having students talk about what they are learning outside of the classroom. The Westing Game will bring that buzz about learning to my classroom and the playground. Through your donation you will allow my students to soar above their daily obstacles through an excitement and a passion for reading and learning. It is often said a book that is the greatest gift you can give a child, although I do not disagree I would argue that the love of books and reading may be an even greater gift. These books will play a vital role in giving my 32 students this gift.
