I am taking on the role of yearbook advisor, serving a population with a variety of backgrounds and interests. Our school is mainly low-income, with many different behavioral and social disorders mixed in. Despite their own personal adversities, they power through and make every day interesting.
My yearbook staff is the most eclectic group of students I have had the pleasure of working with.
I can honestly say that we have a member from each social group on campus and they work so hard to make sure the student body is well-represented in our yearbook. Many of the staff members were new this year, but they powered through, learning new software and writing styles on the fly. Together, they overcame every obstacle thrown at them.
One of those obstacles was outdated, and in some cases crumbling, equipment. My goal is to slowly update our yearbook room to make sure that our staff can work efficiently and to the best of their abilities. With newer, working equipment, I am hoping that we can inspire even better journalists and increase productivity.
My Project
My students and I have been given permission to create a mural of past yearbook photos and honored alumni. The mural will not only help the school's beautification initiative, but it will bring attention to how important our yearbook program is! We will also be painting inspirational Harry Potter and other bookish quotes/murals throughout my new classroom to make it a more updated, welcoming and comfortable environment. I've also requested some banners to help further this theme.
Art brings joy to everyone -- both the artist and the viewers.
We believe that seeing former students on the walls of our school will not only inspire current students, but bring an appreciation to the school itself for it's 50+ years of educating!
