I currently have 22 lovable second graders in my classroom. We come to school each morning excited and happy to see each other. I center my classroom environment around three core values, Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. These are values that not only help the children in the classroom, but they also help the children as they learn to be members of a larger community. I strive to have students understand the importance of being a good friend and treat others with respect both in and out of the classroom.
I want to provide my students with hands on, real world approaches to their learning.
The more the children are hands on and involved with their learning, the more they will take away from the classroom and into their lives outside of school. I strive to integrate movement, music, art, and drama throughout our daily curriculum. My students love to express themselves creatively and I want to support that creative outlet in the classroom.
My Project
I am in need of a variety of manipulatives to reinforce learning in my students. These manipulatives will be used throughout our math and literacy blocks in the classroom. Research has shown that the more students are able to show their work through models and examples, the better they are able to retain their learning.
The manipulatives and supplies I am requesting will provide students a creative and hands on way to show their learning.
In math, my students like to play various games to help build a better understanding of new skills. I need more cards and dice to support that interest in the classroom. The colored counting chips will help when we begin building arrays to develop a strong conceptual understanding of multiplication. For reading and language, my students need different word work manipulatives to practice their spelling and phonics skills. The stamps, letter magnets, and word cubes give students a new and engaging way to practice their words rather than just writing them over and over again. The word tiles provide students with a hands on understanding of sentence structure.
All of these materials serve as a way for students to be actively involved in their learning. The more students are engaged and involved in their learning, the more they remember and recall later on.
