My Students

Our student body is a wonderful mixture of different cultures. We have about 600 students in grades K-4, and our staff is full of amazing, dedicated people who truly love this school and its students.

Our kids love to read and are always excited for book-borrowing times in our library, as well as hearing their classroom teachers or media specialists read aloud to them.

We very much encourage students to be curious, independent, and caring. I see this mirrored in their use of our library; not just in reading, but in choosing a book, learning from it, and understanding that they are responsible for caring for that book while it's in their possession.

My Project

Our students come from many diverse backgrounds and need more books in the school library that reflect our multi-cultural community.

Our students need to see people of color and different cultures represented not just in non-fiction biographical titles, but in picture and storybooks as well.

The books in this project will help students feel represented in the literature they consume, as well as nurture our sense of the global community.

Titles like Cora Cooks Pancit, Thanking the Moon, Lailah’s Lunchbox, Sora and the Cloud, The Night of the Moon, Islandborn, and Festival of Colors follow characters from the Philippines, China, the UAE, Japan, Pakistan, the Dominican Republic, and India. All of these cultures are represented in our school, and should, therefore, be reflected in the books available for them to borrow from our school library.
