The students that I work with seek creativity, pursue responsibility, and thrive on community. They value personal growth, show curiosity, desire innovation, and embrace inclusion. They execute their learning with the mindset that mistakes are learning opportunities.
When they experience stress/anxiety/trauma, they strive to learn and practice self-calming techniques taught at school.
They show empathy for each other and respect the individual needs of others. When guest teachers come to our school, they often tell me there is something very special about our students.
My Project
During these times in public schools - physical space availability is highly sought after. When I returned to school this year, I learned that the space that I'm being moved to would be shared by 5 other specialists. Often there are more than 3 educators sharing the space at one time. Hence, when I have small counseling groups we will need to easily be able to pick up our seats, clipboards and lesson materials, and carry them to another space.
I want my students who are experiencing a high range of emotons or anxiety to still be able to feel safe and comfortable in any part of our building.
Often, we will use the auditorium stage, which is closest to the counseling office. This is the biggest reason that I want these chairs, but they will also be good for other spaces that we may use.
