Our Fifth grade students this year are compassionate and patient, especially with of their peers in class who have difficulty making friends. Oftentimes these students who don't have many friends also struggle with appropriate social behavior, which dissuades their peers from wanting to interact with them.
The kindness and patience that our fifth graders show toward students who have difficulty making friends, is something that we rarely see with students this age.
We notice that they recognize when a student is having a difficult day, and they offer to work outside with that student or to play with that student at the next recess. We are impressed with the maturity that many of our students this year have in putting other students' needs above their own.
My Project
Our Fifth graders spend about half the school day using their Chromebooks for classroom assignments. The built-in mouse device on the Chromebooks is inefficient. We are requesting an external mouse device for each Chromebook that would provide each student with a more successful experience using Chromebooks for classroom assignments and online learning programs. We also need a supply of batteries for some of our classroom devices.
Online learning programs such as Quizziz, Khan Academy, and Reflexmath, incorporate games for students to play as a way of becoming more fluent in math facts, and with the use of an external mouse device, students could play the games faster and receive a more accurate score that reflects their knowledge of math facts and concepts.
Writing essays, creating slideshows, and reviewing math and language arts concepts would reflect authentic learning. Students wouldn't need to interrupt learning to troubleshoot their Chromebook mouse device.
