This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The lyrics of an old popular song says, “Don’t know much about history”, and unfortunately this is true for many students in our district. I am a third grade teacher of a very gifted and talented group of students. I teach at a Blue Ribbon school where the students are eager to learn and ready to be inspired. Since the “No Child left Behind Act” was mandated, our school system emphasizes the tested areas of math, reading and science.
Notably, Social Studies, learning about America has become a subject with no teaching materials, no departmental oversight and no school wide resources. When I think about the future of our nation, I really want to ensure that my students are immersed in history and geography. Currently, my students use out-dated books that do not meet the minimal state requirements for 3rd grade students. We are in desperate need of hands-on materials.
To turn this cycle of neglect around, I wish that my students could receive some of the following resources; a social studies teaching center, United States resource materials and a geography skills kit. Having access to these materials would provide the students a great opportunity to connect to our history.
Please consider this a worthily cause and help the future leaders of our nation gasp the importance of knowing about their country. When our children know about America’s past history, then they can continue to move towards “a more perfect union”.
