I am a new teacher at my school but am not new to the field of teaching. I began working this year with students who have special needs in one of our school's resource rooms. My students have a variety of disabilities that include specific learning disabilities, autism, speech and language impairment, other health impairment, and intellectual disabilities. I bet if you entered my classroom, you would not see students with these disabilities but rather just students who are excited and eager to learn.
My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and family types, but we generally live in an area with a high poverty level and a strong working middle class.
Our families give what they are able to and are often generous to our schools but the funds are still tight for most families and schools in the county.
In general, the students in the classroom are very eager to learn. They arrive at school with smiles on their faces and an unmatched team spirit. They enjoy their time working together in the resource room and especially love to engage in tasks that are hands on and tasks that involve technology.
My Project
The wobble chairs and floor seats that I have selected will help many of my students be more comfortable and able to focus on their work and learning. I have many students who are impacted by attention disorders, difficulties with sensory regulation and overall impulse control. These flexible seating options that include the opportunity to sit on the floor with support and to move while at a desk, will help some of my students be more comfortable overall, will naturally embed the regulation strategies into the seating option and in return increase their ability to focus. Please consider helping to make our classroom a more comfortable space for learning!!!!
