My students are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and come from many different backgrounds. They use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. Most students have very low language and academic skills when they first come to me due to lack of access to language in earlier years. This creates a long road ahead of us as we work to minimize those large gaps.
My students attend an urban school where one hundred percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day-to-day lives. There are many single income families, families that are homeless and families that are receiving assistance in one form or another.
This year, I will have seven students: two second graders, two third graders, one fourth grader and one in fifth grade. Most of my students' language and communication skills are very low. My challenge is to teach them their language, ASL, and academics at the same time. It is a tough challenge, and my students give me their best effort every day!
My Project
Now that we are virtual learning I have found it difficult to see all my students/interpreters/aides on screen during our meetings. I have found that when I screenshare during my meeting, I am unable to see my students’ reactions, them signing back to me with answers, etc. So, having a second monitor would allow me to have everyone in my meeting on one screen while I can control my lessons on the other monitor. It has been a struggle navigating how to service my Deaf students. And I think this will be a solution to my problem.
Having another monitor in the classroom would also help when we are in a hybrid situation for the same reasons.
Before we shut down we were teaching face to face and virtual students simultaneously. This makes teaching very difficult. Having a second monitor would be beneficial for me and for my students to see each other easier while we are in this situation.
Please help make my life teaching a bit easier. Any amount would be greatly appreciated!
