Help me give my students Science Experiments! Since our science curriculum doesn't come with any materials except for student books, the Solar System Activity Tub will give my students the opportunity to have hands-on science lessons!
I teach three equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. Each year, I get to watch them transform from shy fourth graders to tenacious, dedicated fifth graders, ready to conquer the world! My students come from a widely diverse background both in ethnicity and financially. Regardless of home/language barriers, I am always inspired by the spark in my students and their willingness to learn.
I maintain high expectations for all students and truly believe in our students and their success.
At our school, to ensure that all learners achieve, instructional modifications, special needs accommodations and individualized attention are provided for diverse learners. Another high priority is the appreciation of cultural diversity, which is evident in all aspects of our school program. Students understand and respect the variety of cultures represented at our school. Our school aims to inspire students to become well-rounded learners and individuals.
My Project
We have Science workbooks, but we are missing the materials needed for science labs. Currently we are learning about Our Universe. Reading out of a workbook is not good enough.
Students need to not only learn from workbooks but also from a Project Based Learning (PBL) environment.
PBL prepares our students for 21st century skills (teamwork, problem solving, research gathering, time management, information synthesizing, utilizing high tech tools). With this combination of skills, students become directors and managers of their learning process, guided and mentored by the teacher. Project Based Learning gives the student the opportunity to work with others while taking responsibility for their learning.
The Solar System activity tub and the modeling foam will be extremely useful for students to use to have hands-on learning. When we aren't doing experiments, we could work in our small groups to play our Science File Folder Games. When we are finished learning about Our Universe, we will begin building Biomes and Ecosystems. Finally, we finish the year with a unit on Matter and Energy. The bingo game will help us stay focused and on task at the end of the school year!
These resources will help build a foundation for our PBL environment.
