My school is a typical low-key, suburban middle school that teaches a variety of students, including classes of special education students. The majority of our students come from homes where both parents work, which limits the time they can be involved in the day-to-day life of the school. While we do have an active PTA, volunteering, visiting and participation is low.
Our poverty ratio is fifty-three percent, which is greater than the norm for this area.
We have very few high-income families, mostly lower to middle class families. The school itself sets high standards and consistently meets those standards. One way we meet those standards is by providing materials and opportunities students would not normally have due to low incomes.
My Project
Students learn best in a warm welcoming environment. While I do my best to invite them into the library, it is obvious that the furniture is heavy and outdated. Wooden chairs, wooden tables, and wooden bookcases do not entice students who like modern, streamlined areas.
I am asking for two cafe tables and the corresponding chairs as a start to refurbishing the library.
The tables will provide a collaborative area for students to talk with each other while creating an area for experimentation, a colorful place for students to express their ideas and work together on projects or artwork.
The two tables can be easily moved as needed. Students can work problems or outline their projects on the tables. They will provide a warm, welcoming environment for the students.
