My Students

"I hear and I forget. I see and I believe. I do and I understand." Confucius's statement is one I live by in my teaching philosophy. I encourage my students to be active in their learning and experiences. Hands-on science is crucial!

My students are the shining stars of their families and communities, deserving every opportunity possible.

They come mostly from a poverty-stricken neighborhood.

While they have a sense of community within their neighborhood, they come to me lacking knowledge and experiences most children have. I help my students through local funds, grants, and fundraising to participate in many scientific activities.

Several of the students took their love of science and participated in the science fair, three kids represented our school at the regionals, with one of them advancing to state and Broadcom Masters.

We are currently working with a university on an EPA environmental grant to show that one person can make a difference - but more is better.

As always we display our science achievements at community events where the students present their topics. These kids do not let their economic levels affect the positive impact they will make on our scientific communities.

My Project

Unfortunately, many of my science manipulatives and models were damaged due to Hurricane Harvey. The storm caused damage we are still slowing fixing to our homes and community. Replacing my teaching resources will recover, heal, and rebuild not only my classroom, but my students' achievements.

While teaching the human body, it can be difficult for students to visualize exactly what I’m describing.

How everything fits in it's own place. They “see” the items in 2D images, but having models readily available clears confusion, promotes questioning, and aids in the understanding of very difficult concepts. Help me create lessons that my students are able to grasp and increase their love of learning. Plus, what is a science classroom without a skeleton?
