A Mirror in a Book: Diverse and Inspiring Books

Help me give my students access to a wide range of inspiring pieces of literature that reflect the diversity of the modern classroom: people of color, bilingual elements, and women in STEM!

My Students

Our school is Title I and has a significant number of students from low-income households. I know every teacher probably feels this way, but I think I have the best kids in the world. They are sweet, kind, and oh-so-curious. They make it easy to get up and go to work in the morning!

My students are wiggle masters... no matter the time of day, they like to be moving in one way or another.

The only time of day they're willing to sit in one spot for more than 10 seconds at a time is during read aloud, where they absolutely love listening to stories.

My students are particularly interested in video games and technology, and they're often as proficient (or even more so!) than I am. They also have a passion for science, especially learning about animals.

My Project

The modern classroom is full of diversity: students from different countries, different cultures, different religions, and different socioeconomic statuses meet in one space to engage in the learning process together. Yet, most classroom libraries fail to reflect this diversity in their choice of books.

My students deserve to have books that act as a mirror: showing them characters with similar experiences and backgrounds achieving fantastic things.

These books will give all of my students access to quality literature that reflects their own lives and gives them positive role models and fantastic ideals to aspire to. They will give me the chance to teach in a more culturally sensitive manner and reach all of my students at the same level. Finally... these books are just plain fun!
