My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day, they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.
I teach at a Title I school in where more than half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.
My Project
School is expensive! It's even more expensive when you live in a community, and go to a school, that has a free and reduced lunch population of over 75%. Even basic school supplies can be a burden on a family, especially if that family has multiple school-aged children. These children need pencils, crayons, and scissors to complete even the most trivial of school tasks.
Imagine the stress a family could feel if they had to supply multiple children but were struggling to pay their rent.
Wouldn't it be great if we could help that family, or many families, by supplying their children with basic school supplies. I started the year with a multitude of supplies to help these families, but in a grade level with 170 students those supplies run out fast.
I've got great projects in the works for my students but we need crayons, colored pencils, scissors, and glue sticks to make them happen. We use interactive notebooks on a daily basis, and the kids are keeping up with it, but doing so had depleted our pencil supply. We also use white boards daily to practice our math problems but those markers dry out so fast when you've got 170 students rolling through them. It is time to re-up my supply back stock so all of these hard-working children can come to school knowing that their most basic academic needs are met.
