I am a mathematics teacher at Bayard Rustin Educational Complex (formerly Humanities High School) in New York City. I teach 9th and 10th grade. My students are mostly from low-income families and are enrolled in the free lunch program.
I love teaching in my school and enjoy seeing my students' faces everyday. I believe my students deserve the best educational environment. Currently, supplies in my high school are extremely scarce and there is no budget for more supplies for the classroom.
I have had the opportunity to decorate my classroom with my students' work. My freshmen math class spends 3 periods a day in my class (two for math and one for advisory), therefore, I believe it is essential for my students to enjoy their learning environment and feel like they are at home. My students currently respect our classroom and make the best out of our limited supply situation. One item that I am requesting is a bookshelf to place our math textbooks. Currently, the textbooks are piled on the floor. It would be wonderful if I could place the books (textbooks and math journals) on a bookcase. With the bookcase, my book monitors can take turns giving the books out to the class and keeping them neatly organized.
Secondly, I would love to utilize transparencies on an overhead projector in my classroom. My students would greatly enjoy coming up to the overhead and explaining various math calculations. I could also use the overhead for manipulatives demonstrations such as algebra tiles and tangrams. There are many resources that I cannot utilize since my class does not have an overhead projector. I am fortunate enough to have a screen, however, not fortunate enough to have an overhead projector. Therefore, I am requesting an overhead projector snd several replacement bulbs.
