I am a 6th grade Math teacher in the very diverse district of Manchester, New Hampshire. My students are 6th graders in an urban school district with a heavy refugee and immigrant population. There are over 70 languages spoken at our school. With the recent pandemic, we have toggled between hybrid and (mostly) fully remote learning. This has been heartbreaking for our students.
I am counting the days until I can get back into my classroom and serve my students fully.
I look forward to reopening and interacting with all of my students personally in a safe and healthy environment. This current project is focused on continued remote learning. I am desperate for ways to keep them engaged and help them to feel connected. I am worried about their emotional well-being throughout this time of distancing from others. They need to feel safe and need a sense of normalcy.
The move to middle school is tough for anybody. Five elementary schools merge together and these children must learn to make new friends, embrace diversity, and conquer new academic challenges. Social connections are very difficult when you cannot interact in a regular social setting.
My Project
My students will rotate speaking parts to read the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" aloud in our Enrichment class. This will help the students to connect with each other and have some fun during our fully remote Enrichment class.
The first year of middle school should be a time to make new friends and spread your wings!
Instead, my students are trying to develop friendships remotely with a teacher always present.
We are missing sports, crowded lunchrooms, assemblies, school plays, dances, group projects, field trips, and high fives.
