This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach an estimated 60 plus African American students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of the students receive free and/or reduced lunch services. Most of the students come from single parent homes and/or being raised by some family members.
Our students love hands on activities, creating projects, reading and discussing relevant topics in class.
I try to remind my students that I come from the same background as them, but I made the correct decisions to make sure that I did not become a statistics. In my classroom, I strive to explain to my students that every one needs an education to become successful and an productive citizen in society.
My Project
With everything going on in our community today, visiting The Legacy Museum and The National Memorial for Peace and Justice will allow students to see the changes that have occurred over the decades. Students will be able to learn about the history of racial inequality and economic injustice in the United States and how it has created continuing challenges for all Americans. They will be able to form formative decisions of what more can be be done to advance and achieve a collective goal of equal justice for all. This field trip will increase my students’ ability to think critically as well as their ability to appreciate and understand what life was like for people before today's time. These aspects of learning are important to students in fifth grade.
