Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a small charter high school in New Mexico with an enrollment of 135. I teach art to students in grades nine through twelve. Our students are required to do 90 hours of community service each semester as part of their graduation requirement.
It is often difficult to get teenagers motivated to do work for others.
However, many enjoy working with young children. We have designed a community service project that is a collaboration between the Creative Writing classes and the Drawing & Painting classes.
The Language Arts students will write stories, and the art students will make a handmade, illustrated book for each story. Then we'll go to a needy elementary school and share them with the little children. We need to purchase some of the specialized tools and materials used for constructing books: safety rulers for cutting board; decorative paper and book board for covers; screw punches and needles for binding; and other items.
My Project
To begin, the writing students will create short stories with subjects that appeal to young children. Then, the art students, working in small groups, will make the book pages complete with text, illustrations and pop-ups. The covers will be made with book board covered with beautiful handmade paper. The books will be bound together using various traditional stitching methods. The older students will read the stories to the younger ones, then the books will be donated to the elementary school.
This project will enable the teens to enjoy the act of giving and to be reminded of the value of reading books.
In addition, they will be practicing their Language Arts and fine arts skills, working cooperatively with one another, and fulfilling community service obligations in a meaningful way. Knowing that a little child will be thrilled to see a story come alive will be a great motivator.
