Help me give my students creative tools to fill a "magic suitcase." Materials requested will aid in child-based yoga instruction that emphasizes mindfulness and meditation exercises, increasing focus and relaxation.
First grade is an exciting year full of many social and developmental changes. I have a very engaged group of students and they love to learn. However, there are times when “teachable moments” are interrupted due to outdated and insufficient materials, that I am using to teach them.
Our 100-year-old school is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural school, serving students in pre-l through 8th grade.
We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We are nestled in a south side Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.
I am so excited to bring yoga and meditation, that is especially designed for children, into my classroom and school. I recently attended and completed the three-day Rainbow Yoga for Kids teacher training. I will use my knowledge from the training and the materials outlined in this project to integrate yoga into my 1st graders' daily routines, as well as creating an after school program for students ages 5-9.
Children need opportunities to move, connect, have fun and reflect.
We will use books and cards to guide students through a series of poses and stretches. Children will assist in the co-creation of stories and journeys that incorporate partner poses, breathing techniques and games. Through the design of activities and lessons using the specified materials, students will develop a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them. Help us pack our magic yoga suitcase and let the adventure begin!
